Since we are re-inventing the car, can we do the same with its key?

As a first-of-it's kind vehicle, and with a hefty price tag, the Lightyear 0's accesories needed to match the styling, luxury and philosophy of the brand. Can we give the old keyfob a new twist, while maintaining its usabilty?

We started with bechmarking what new players were bringing to the market. From there, and keeping Lightyear's design principles in mind, we hand-sketched a spread of concepts, which served as a starting points for the 3D designs.

Using moodboards and identifying signature features in the vehicle, we worked with the branding team and made a variety of renders that were circulated internally. After feedback and clear direction, we collaborated with the entry system supplier in designing the PCB and package, as well as what was achievable with our tight dealines.

Why just one button? In keeping in line with the Lightyear philosophy, and since in most cases the key will work by proximity, we thought of keeping the interface clean and minimal.

As we received prototypes and samples, we solved quality issues related to the styling and interactive elements of the key, such as the button, light and haptic feedback. Additionally, we found the applicable certification tests and communicated those requirements with the supplier. We also fought for waterproofness and smooth material finish. The battery consumption, and the overmoulded section that covers the push-button proved to be the most challeging aspects.
